Soviet Tallinn Tours

Estonia was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, and much of that history sits outside the medieval postcards: apartment blocks, former security sites and the stories of everyday life under occupation. These tours cover that side of Tallinn, from short walks to longer guided days with a private guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Helsinki to Tallinn, and is a day trip realistic?

By ferry. The fastest crossings take about two hours, others two and a half hours or more, and several companies sail every day. A day trip works, but with the crossings you get only a few hours in the city – enough for the Old Town, not for much more. We list the ferry day trips that start in Tallinn; for the crossing itself, book with the ferry company.

Is a guided Old Town tour worth it, or can I just walk it?

You can walk it – the Old Town is small and compact. A guide is worth it for the stories behind the walls and towers, which signs do not tell. Most walking tours here last 1 to 2 hours; expect cobblestones and a climb between the lower town and Toompea hill.

How far is Lahemaa National Park, and how long does the day trip take?

The park starts roughly 50 to 70 km east of Tallinn, about an hour by road. The day tours in our list last around 7 to 8 hours including the drive, the bog walk and the stops on the coast. If you only have half a day, pick a waterfall tour closer to the city instead.

Can I walk on a bog in any weather?

Bog-shoe and bog-walk tours run on boardwalks or with bog shoes and are weather dependent. The exact season, the minimum age and the footwear are stated on each booking page – check them before you book.

Is Tallinn a beach destination?

Not really. Pirita Beach, about 15 minutes from the centre, has 2.4 km of sand, but the Baltic Sea rarely warms much above 20 °C. We list no beach tours; Tallinn is about the Old Town, history, food and nature day trips.

Are the tours suitable for children?

The Old Town walks and the nature day trips usually are, but age limits and pace differ by operator and are stated on each booking page. Shooting, bar crawl and nightlife tours are not meant for children; check the minimum age on the booking page.

How far in advance should I book?

Old Town walks start several times a day and often have places left. Small-group day trips and anything around the Christmas season fill up sooner. Free cancellation depends on the tour and is shown on the booking page before you pay.
