Tallinn in Winter: Husky Sledding, Snowmobiles and Sauna Tours
4 min read
The snow outings from Tallinn depend on snow, and not every listing says what happens without it. The two husky rides switch to wheeled carts; the snowmobile page says nothing on the subject, so ask the provider before you book. Here is what each page states.
Husky sledding and walks
The husky dog sledding tour with transfer costs €270 and lasts 2.5 hours for up to 8 people. The minivan transfer takes about 40 to 60 minutes each way. The ride itself is 1.5 to 2 km and lasts about 10 minutes. The season runs from October to April; with too little snow, the sleds are replaced by wheeled carts. A no-show means the transfer leaves without you. The meeting point is the Tourist Information Centre at Niguliste 2 in the Old Town, and the description promises a hot drink after the ride.
The Pack Power husky ride costs €189, is private and lasts about two hours, with a 15 to 20 minute ride on a sled or four-wheeled cart. A rig takes up to 2 people, with a combined weight limit of 180 kg. People with animal allergies are listed as not suitable. The meeting point on the booking page is the kennel at Kotka-Jaani, Ridaküla, in Lääne-Viru County, not Tallinn; whether a transfer is part of the booking is not clear from the page, so ask the provider.
The husky farm visit and forest hike costs €216 and takes 4.5 hours. It is a cani-cross walk of about one hour with a dog in a waist harness, not a sled ride. The FAQ says children aged 12 and over can take part if they are comfortable with medium-sized dogs and weigh more than the dog.
Snowmobile
The snowmobile adventure with transfers costs €250, takes three hours and is private. It includes one hour of snowmobile rental with safety gear (one machine per 2 people), a guide and hot drinks and snacks. You need a valid driver’s licence, and pregnant women are listed as not suitable.
Sauna and winter nature
The bog walk and sauna tour costs €220, takes five hours, is private, includes hotel pick-up and a one-hour sauna, and runs year-round. The page lists bog shoes at extra charge and says lunch is not included. The Prangli Island hiking and sauna tour costs €240, lasts eight hours and includes ferry tickets, lunch and sauna access.
For a winter day without snow sports, the Lahemaa winter day trip costs €139.50 and takes eight hours in a group of up to 14, with a winter walk in Viru Bog, Palmse Manor and Altja. Lunch is at your own expense.
What to know
Bring warm clothing, hat, gloves and waterproof shoes, as the husky page says. For the Christmas season see our market guide.
Our recommendation
For first-timers: the husky sledding tour, knowing the sled ride itself is about 10 minutes and the rest is transfer and time with the dogs. For a longer, quieter outing, the bog and sauna tour. See things to do in Tallinn.
