Tallinn Old Town: Guided Walk or Self-Guided Audio Tour?
4 min read
Book a guide if this is your first visit and you want the Old Town explained in one go; use an audio guide if you would rather set your own pace. Tallinn’s Old Town is compact and listed by UNESCO, but it is split into two parts that feel different: the merchants’ Lower Town around Town Hall Square and the Upper Town on Toompea hill, where the nobility and the rulers lived (Visit Tallinn). A good route covers both.
Three guided options
The guided historical walking tour takes two hours and starts under the Town Hall clock, where the guide holds a yellow sign. The route runs up to Toompea, past Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St Mary’s Cathedral, to the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewpoints and back through the Danish King’s Garden. It costs €35 with 1,614 reviews, and the description puts the group limit at 15. Guides speak English or Russian.
The one-hour walk to Town Hall Square runs the other way: it starts at the Victory Column on Freedom Square, covers Toompea and the viewpoints, and ends at Town Hall Square. It costs €14. A private group is possible.
If you need a language other than English, the two-hour medieval walking tour lists German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian alongside English, with groups limited to 10. It starts at the Town Hall and includes the Town Hall Pharmacy and a marzipan stop. Holy Ghost Church is marked as an optional extra with a fee.
The self-guided option
The Old Town audio tour costs €8. You start anywhere on the map, and the commentary plays as you reach each stop. The route is about two hours. You need to install the Navicup app, redeem your booking reference there and download the content first; the page says the activated map stays available for one week and that a charged phone and headphones help.
| Tour | Duration | Starting point | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided historical walk | 2 hours | Town Hall Square | Live guide, English or Russian |
| Guided walk to Town Hall Square | 1 hour | Freedom Square | Live guide, English or Estonian |
| Medieval walking tour | 2 hours | Town Hall Square | Live guide, six languages |
| Audio guide | about 2 hours | Anywhere on the map | App, your own pace |
What to know before you go
The streets are cobbled and Toompea is a hill. All three guided walks climb to Toompea. The historical walk says the route has several flights of stairs, has no ramp access and is not suitable for people with mobility impairments. The one-hour walk mentions stairs and uneven surfaces. The medieval walking tour lists wheelchair users and pregnant women as not suitable. Whether a given route suits your needs is something to confirm on the booking page before you buy.
Entry to Dome Cathedral is not part of the historical walk; the description says it is at your own expense. Dress for the weather, because every format is outdoors.
Our recommendation
For most first-time visitors the two-hour guided historical walk is the best fit: it starts at the obvious meeting point and covers both halves of the Old Town. Pick the one-hour version when you have a short stop, for example between ferry sailings, and the audio guide when you dislike groups.
