Bog Walk near Tallinn: Viru Bog, Bog Shoes and Sunrise Hikes
4 min read
For a first bog walk, take a boardwalk trip; choose bog shoes if you want to leave the path and are comfortable with a longer, softer walk. A bog is a wet landscape of moss, small pools and sparse pines, and near Tallinn it is a short drive away. The Viru bog in Lahemaa National Park is about an hour from the city, with a 3.5 km trail (5.5 km as a circuit) and a wide boardwalk that reaches an observation tower after 1.3 km, according to Visit Estonia.
Three kinds of bog walk
Boardwalk and waterfall. The Jägala waterfall and bog walk costs €153 and runs about four and a half hours. After a 30-minute drive it stops at Jägala, which the description calls Estonia’s widest natural waterfall, and then walks the Viru boardwalk for about 1.5 hours. The page calls the trail flat and suitable for all fitness levels and says groups are up to seven. Bog shoes are available on request at an extra charge.
Bog shoes. The guided bog-shoe hike costs €177 and lasts four and a half hours, with 25 reviews. The van ride from Tallinn takes about an hour each way, with about two hours of hiking near the Kõnnu Suursoo lookout in between. The operator describes bog shoes, which spread your weight on the moss, and a hike suitable for people with moderate fitness. Groups are up to seven, the guide speaks English and the minimum age is 10. A reviewer compares the shoes to snowshoes and says the walk is harder than normal walking.
Sunrise. The sunrise bog hike costs €115 for four hours. You are picked up in Tallinn before sunrise and walk in a small group of up to six, with mindful walking, meditation and warm tea. The page calls it an easy to moderate hike.
| Tour | Duration | Group | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jägala and bog walk | 4.5 hours | Up to 7 | Boardwalk, bog shoes extra |
| Bog-shoe hike | 4.5 hours | Up to 7 | Off-boardwalk with bog shoes |

The bog and the sauna
If you want a longer day, the private bog walk with a countryside sauna costs €220 and includes a one-hour sauna, hotel pickup and an optional swim in a bog lake if the weather allows. The page says bog shoes cost extra, lunch is not part of the price and wheelchair users are not suitable; bring swimwear if you want to swim.
Practical points
Bring comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing; for the bog-shoe hike the operator asks for waterproof hiking boots and rents rubber boots on request. The boardwalk is open all year, and the bog-shoe hike’s description says the scenery changes by season, from spring greens to autumn colour and a white winter landscape. For the other tours, ask the operator about children’s bog-shoe sizes and age limits before booking. For more on the park, read about Lahemaa day trips from Tallinn.
Our recommendation
For most people the Jägala and bog walk is the easy start because it is flat and short. If you specifically want to try bog shoes, book the bog-shoe hike. See all Lahemaa and nature tours for more options.
