Lahemaa National Park from Tallinn: Which Day Trip Is Worth It?
4 min read
Choose a guided day trip if you want Lahemaa without driving, and decide between the two main ones by group size and lunch. Lahemaa lies roughly an hour’s drive east of Tallinn and is described by the operators as Estonia’s oldest national park. In one day you can combine forest, a wetland walk, a Baltic Sea fishing village and a manor estate.
The two day trips
The full-day tour with the Viru bog walk lasts seven hours and costs €122, with 964 reviews. Stops are Jägala waterfall, a 1.5-hour walk on the Viru bog boardwalks, a lunch break at a tavern, one manor (Sagadi or Palmse) and one fishing village (Altja or Käsmu, depending on the season). The guide speaks English or Spanish. The page says lunch is not included and that manor entry is not part of the regular price. It runs year-round in all weather.
The small-group Lahemaa day trip lasts eight hours and costs €125. It is limited to seven people, starts at Suur-Karja 17 in central Tallinn and is guided in English. It also stops at Jägala waterfall, walks the Viru bog (about an hour), visits Käsmu and Altja, and the highlights list a light two-course lunch in a countryside restaurant. A visit to Vihula Manor is optional.

The bog, in numbers
The Viru bog trail is 3.5 km long, or 5.5 km as a circuit, and a wide boardwalk leads 1.3 km to an observation tower about 11 metres high, according to Visit Estonia. The trail is open all year. Both tours walk it. If bogs interest you most, read our bog walk guide.
Do you need a car?
Not for these tours, which use a van or minivan from Tallinn. If you would rather set your own pace and stops, you can compare rental cars for Tallinn. Check the national park’s own visitor information for current opening hours of manors and centres, because the tours may vary the route by season.
Which one for whom
The seven-hour tour suits you if you like a longer walk and prefer to choose your own lunch. The eight-hour small-group trip suits you if you want a smaller group and a meal built in. Neither booking page states a minimum age or limits for children, so ask the operator before you book with a family. For a shorter outing, the half-day Jägala waterfall and bog walk tours are listed under day trips from Tallinn.
Our recommendation
For most visitors the small-group trip is the better package because lunch and a small group are part of the plan, while the full-day tour is the pick when you want a longer bog walk. More choices are on the Lahemaa and nature tours page.
